Description:
Geometrical Optics:
Reflection and refraction at plane surfaces. Critical angle and total internal reflection. Refractive index by minimum deviation and by use of refractometers.

Reflection at curved surfaces. Focal Lengths. Image formation. Gaussian formula. Ray tracing methods. Their lenses and their combination. Lens makers' formula. Power of a lens.

Qualitative treatment of lens aberrations. Optical instruments, High quality lens objectives. The camera, microscope and astronomical telescope.

Physical Optics:
Properties of wave motion. Amplitude, period, phase, frequency. Plane wave equation and its solution.

Superposition principle. Graphical summation of wavelets. Wave groups and group velocity.

Two-beam interference. Young's double slit, Fresnel biprism, Optical wedge, Newton's rings.

Diffraction by a single slit. The double slit and the diffraction grating.

e.m. waves. Maxwell's equations.

Assessment is by assignments and examination.

Prerequisite: PHS 103.
